Dr Mohammad S. Islam

Dr Mohammad S. Islam is the Head of Research, Development and Product at Bygen, an Australian sustainable activated carbon company spun out from the University of Adelaide and pioneering patented low-temperature activated carbon (LTA) technology for PFAS, water, and contaminated-site treatment. With a PhD in materials and process engineering, Dr Islam leads the development of Bygen’s next-generation activated carbon products, focusing on adsorption performance, pore structure optimisation, and real-world treatment challenges such as short-chain PFAS.

Dr Islam also leads Bygen’s Australian Government-funded CRC-P project, which is focused on advancing treatment solutions for short-chain PFAS and investigating pathways for activated carbon regeneration and reuse. He has played a central role in translating Bygen’s patented LTA technology from research into scalable, commercially deployed solutions, supporting utilities, consultants, industry, and government agencies seeking effective and lower-impact PFAS treatment options. His work addresses the limitations of conventional coal- and coconut-based activated carbon while ensuring new carbon materials are technically robust and operationally practical for local government and infrastructure application
