Founded in 2018, Bygen is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia. Bygen is dedicated to empowering industries to choose sustainable, cost-effective and high-quality activated carbon. By transforming renewable agricultural and forestry by-products, we enable businesses to improve sustainability, lower overall carbon emissions and achieve ESG goals. Our mission is to decarbonise the production of materials that benefit both people and the environment.

Our ambition extends to creating scalable production of advanced materials derived from activated carbon in the future and developing sustainable, adjacent, deep technologies. Bygen has raised funds from some of Australia’s leading Climate Tech investors, including Alberts Impact, Artesian, Breakthrough Victoria, and Investible.

2025

Bygen was selected as a Top 100 Semi-Finalist for the EPIC 2025 Grand Finale, one of 33 GreenTech companies recognised.
Australia’s Top 100 Innovators of 2025 revealed in The List
Secured $3 million in CRC-P Round 17 funding from the Australian Government to address PFAS contamination in water, in collaboration with RMIT University, CSIRO, and the Victorian Water Industry Association.
At a North American production plant under construction, Bygen’s technology was independently validated as carbon-negative via a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in accordance with ISO 14040, 14044, and 14067 standards, and the company secured its largest activated carbon order to date, marking a major step in commercial adoption.
Commenced construction of our latest facility in South East Asia.
Breakthrough Victoria led a $3.5 million follow-on investment round in Bygen, alongside continued support from Investible, FMG Circular Invest, Alberts, and the University of Adelaide.
Achieved ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management) and ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management) certification.

2024

Began commissioning of the largest LTA plant to date.
Winner: Circular Economy & Waste Management Track at the 2024 Net Zero Challenge.
Top 50 Silver Award: Featured among the 50 Most Innovative Manufacturing Companies by AuManufacturing.
Finished commissioning of an LTA production line in Adelaide, South Australia.

2023

Bygen delivered its first bulk bag of activated carbon to a remediation project in Australia.
Bygen’s activated carbon plant in Swan Reach, SA, was granted planning approval. The plant is designed to produce 2,000 tonnes of activated carbon per year from locally available nutshells.
Bygen was selected as a finalist in the Falling Walls Venture competition, a global competition for science start-ups.
