Drinking Water Treatment Using Activated Carbon

Clean drinking water is essential for maintaining public health, as poor-quality drinking water can lead to severe illnesses. To address this risk, water treatment facilities worldwide rely on chemical, separation and filtration processes to purify drinking water. Among the most common processes is the use of activated carbon (AC), which plays a crucial role in removing organic contaminants, trace chemicals, chlorine, and odour-causing substances from water.

Bygen, is a global leader in the production of high-quality activated carbon for drinking water treatment, combining proprietary technologies with a strong commitment to sustainability. Our advanced processes ensure the highest levels of efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility during production.

How Activated Carbon Purifies Drinking Water

Activated carbon is renowned for its high surface area, making it highly effective at adsorbing impurities from water. During the “activation” process the carbon's surface area increases reactively, creating and expanding millions of microscopic pores. These pores attract and trap organic compounds, chemicals, and odours, removing them from the solution and purifying water as it passes through.

Bygen's Advantages

At Bygen, we produce a range of activated carbons that are effective and environmentally friendly. Our activated carbon products are designed to meet the needs of residential, commercial, municipal, and industrial water treatment applications, providing optimal performance, simplicity and promoting sustainability.

Sustainability

Manufactured using eco-friendly processes, Bygen’s activated carbon is produced with minimal environmental impact. We prioritise sustainable practices in every step of production, from sourcing raw materials to reducing carbon emissions.

Types of Activated Carbon

Granular Activated Carbon

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC)

GAC consists of larger carbon granules, making it ideal for continuous flow applications where extended contact time between water and carbon enhances contaminant removal.

Powdered Activated Carbon.jpg

Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC)

PAC is composed of finer particles that offer rapid adsorption of contaminants. Its versatility makes it suitable for both short-term, intermediate and large-scale municipal water treatment applications, where precise dosing and fast adsorption are required.

Case study AWQC (2).png

SA Water at the Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC)

Two of the most common water quality issues faced by water management companies are elevated levels of geosmin and MIB. These two chemicals, which are naturally occurring compounds with earthy or musty odours, are associated with algae blooms or other microorganisms in water sources.

Testing conducted by SA Water at the Australian Water Quality Centre (AWQC) demonstrated that Bygen’s sustainable powdered activated carbon (PAC) product could achieve up to 50% improved removal rates of geosmin and MIB compared to the current market leading coal based PAC. This testing involved spiking of geosmin and MIB into test water at concentrations between 130 - 150 ng/L, with PAC dosage rates between 10 and 40 mg/L applied.

The contact time and PAC dose rates applied represent typical conditions observed in drinking water treatment. The results from this trial indicated that only 1200 kg of PAC would be required for a WTP flow rate of 10 ML/day with a 7-day PAC dose period. This demonstrates strong benefits for water treatment companies, who can achieve target MIB and geosmin reduction levels with reduced application of PAC in their water quality management systems through using Bygen’s activated carbon products.
